Progress: 9 of 15

What are Altcoins?

“Altcoins” means any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. There are thousands of them, created to solve different problems or add new features that Bitcoin doesn’t have.

Major Altcoins in 2026 (Neutral Overview)

Ethereum (ETH)

The smart contract leader

Still the dominant platform for DeFi, NFTs, and decentralized applications.

Solana (SOL)

High-speed blockchain

Known for very fast transactions and low fees, popular for DeFi and meme coins.

Binance Coin (BNB)

Utility token for the Binance ecosystem with reduced trading fees.

Others (XRP, Cardano, Avalanche, etc.)

Each has different goals — faster payments, research, or scalability.

Risk: Altcoins vs Bitcoin

Bitcoin
  • Most established and battle-tested
  • Highest market dominance
  • Lower relative risk
Most Altcoins
  • Higher potential upside (and downside)
  • More competition and uncertainty
  • Significantly higher risk

How Beginners Should Think About Altcoins

  • Only invest what you can afford to lose completely
  • Do your own research — never buy based on hype
  • Keep altcoins to a small percentage of your portfolio
  • Focus first on Bitcoin and Ethereum

Key Takeaway

Altcoins offer innovation and higher potential returns, but they come with much higher risk. Bitcoin remains the safest and most proven cryptocurrency. For beginners, understanding the basics is far more valuable than chasing the latest hot altcoin.

Quick Summary

  • Altcoins = any crypto except Bitcoin
  • Ethereum leads in smart contracts
  • Solana focuses on speed
  • Most altcoins carry higher risk
